The incident happened in the Kech district of southwestern Balochistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Iran for a long way.

Pakistan's army said that four of its border patrol soldiers were killed by people who came from Iran.

Fighters attacked the soldiers in the Jalgai sector of Kech district, the military said in a statement on Saturday. The soldiers were on a routine border patrol along the border between Pakistan and Iran.

No one said right away that they were behind the attack.

ISPR, the military's media arm, said in a statement, "A group of terrorists operating from the Iranian side attacked a routine border patrol of Pakistani security forces along the Pakistan-Iran Border."

"The necessary steps are being taken to get in touch with the Iranian side so that terrorists on the Iranian side can be dealt with effectively and these kinds of things don't happen again."

It said that Sher Ahmed, Muhammad Asghar, Muhammad Irfan, and Abdur Rasheed were the people who died.

Pakistan and Iran have a border that runs for more than 900 km (45 miles). In the past, there have been a number of security problems.

Nationalist Baluch rebel groups in the area say they are fighting for a bigger share of the area's resources. Both sides of the border are home to Baluch groups.

In January, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said it was wrong that four security officials had been killed in Baluchistan, near the border with Iran. He said, "We expect Iran to make sure its land isn't used for attacks on other countries."

At least 13 people were hurt when a bomb went off in a passenger train in the Bolan district of the province in January.
